Yesterday (sunday) morning we went to check out electric bikes in our local bike store here in Tongzhou district, Beijing as the old one is starting to show defects. Time for a new one as we use our e-bike quite intensively for going to the market or supermarket, handling company administration matters in local district government offices, going to the subway station or other purposes. Convenient, fast and without sweat in summertime :-)

The E-bike market is huge in China, 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲-𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱, expected to increase considerably in coming years. In 2020 there have been approximately 𝟱𝟭,𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝗲-𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮 and 223,000 registrations had been in companies associated to the electric-bike business as of February this year.

For our regular (good old-fashioned and healthy pedal) bikes, we do not rely on ownership anymore but gladly and very conveniently participate in the 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 here in Beijing. While there has been a hype and also many market suspicions around bike sharing in China few years ago, it seems to have increasingly stabilized and sustainable.

Beijing showed about 𝟲𝟵𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟬, 13% increase from 2019, with top day September 24 having 4.35 million rides. The city government strives to limit the number of shared bikes in 6 most densely populated city center districts to 800,000 to avoid blockages. Pick-up and drop off locations are also more regulated with possible penalties if you leave the bike at a congested place. And at the same time the government stimulates 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.
